Governor Carcieri announced he is commiting funds to help some of the most needy residents have their gas or electric heat restored. An estimated 228 families will be getting household heat restored because of LIHEAP money and approximately $35,000 from his contingency fund.

Governor Carcieri congratulates the new Toyota Family Literacy program which was launched Monday in a ceremony at the Robert L. Bailey Elementary School, in Providence. This is an important pilot effort involving Providence Public Schools, the National Center for Familiy Literacy and Toyota to provide literacy training to targeted immigrant Latino families. The Governor notes this is in line with his recent announcement of an additional $1.4 million funding for 35 adult literacy agencies across the state. November 10, 2003

Governor Donald L. Carcieri drew the first three names for low number license plates in a lottery at the State House, October 28, 2003. People who were interested submitted post cards with the information on what kind of plate they wanted, passenger, motorcycle, etc. The cards were put into a drum for the drawing.

Governor Carcieri announced the allocation of Adult Literacy funds in the Fiscal 2004 budget, presenting symbolic checks to the representatives of the 34 agencies that are being funded to provide literacy training. Governor Carcieri announced the formation of the Governor's Narragansett Bay and Watershed Planning Commission at a ceremony at Oakland Beach in Warwick. The commission is designed to identify and pursue solutions to the many issues facing Narragansett Bay. Former Rhode Island Governor J. Joseph Garrahy will head the group. October 22, 2003

Governor Carcieri shares his delight with the Grand Opening of the New Providence netWORKri Center. The Center is a "one-stop" career center where job seekers can find counselors, aptitude testing, state-of-the-art resources, andmore; There are English as a Second Language classes, General Equivalency Degree (GED) preparation and job training to become certified nurse's assistants and medical office assistants. This is a partnership of Department of Labor and Training, Department of Education, Deparment of Elderly Affairs, Department of Human Services as well as AFL-CIO Dislocated Workers Program. Goodwill Industries, and Workforce Solutions of Providence/Cranston. October 16, 2003.

The new Providence office of netWORKri on the bus line on Reservoir Avenue provides internet access, computers, and fax machines to assist job-seekers with their search for employment. at no charge to the customer. There are also classrooms and meeting rooms.This is one of six such centers across the state.

 


 

Little Hero

Governor Donald L. Carcieri congratulates a little hero, who was at the State House today to receive a Rhode Island E-9-1-1 Emergency Telephone System Young Hero Award for his heroic action and knowledge of the proper use of the 9-1-1 Emregency telephone system on September 9th. Six year old Austin O'Brien called the emergency help line when his mother fell ill while he was alone with her at home. His mother recovered and attended today's ceremony. E-9-1-1 Director Raymond LaBelle presented the commendation. September 30, 2003

The new office here will work with local agencies to address homelessness in Rhode Island communities. Governor Carcieri said "With the Corporation for Supportive Housing located in our capital city, we will be able to better address the complex issue of homelessness and affordable housing. This is about empowering residents. It's about revitalizing neighborhoods. And it's about building our economy. At the announcement of this recruiting, which only takes place every four years, Governor Carcieri told the press that he is proud of the troopers and the service they provide to the state. As Governor, Carcieri is the Captain General and the Chief of the Rhode Island National Guard. The oath is typically administered by an officer of the National Guard to new enlistees in small groups. No other Rhode Island Governor has administered this oath to enlistees in the past 100 years. March 27, 2003.

Vets Valentines Day

Governor Carcieri paid tribute to all veterans, and Rhode Islanders recently deployed, in ceremonies for the National Salute to Hospitalized Veterans at the Providence VA Medical Center. Valentines from school children were distributed to hospitalized veterans, thanking them for their service. (Feb. 14, 2003)

The Governor talked with Michael DeRita about his plan to pursue a career in law. Michael attended Providence's Robert Kennedy Elementary School and Nathaniel Green Middle School Gifted Program.
