Do your part to Support Our Cities and Towns
Time is running out for cities and towns across Rhode Island. Drastic cuts in state aid during the global economic downturn have left communities struggling to perform even the most basic municipal functions, and many are facing fiscal collapse and bankruptcy.
But Governor Chafee has proposed a solution. The Governor has put forward a municipal reform and relief legislative package that gives individual communities the tools they need to reach fiscal health and stability. It also contains relief for the many costly and burdensome state mandates that have placed a severe strain on the finances of Rhode Island's cities and towns.
The current municipal fiscal crisis jeopardizes the ability of communities across Rhode Island to educate their young people, protect their citizens, and perform basic tasks such as making payroll for employees or maintaining public spaces and buildings. A number of cities and towns are on the verge of bankruptcy. Governor Chafee knows the devastating effect municipal failures will have, and that is why he is asking for your support for his legislative package.
